How to Choose a Digital Level in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Ensure That the Display Is Readable and Choose an Illuminated Screen if You Frequently Work in Low Light
  2. Verify the Dimensions and Select the Appropriate Size Level for the Jobs at Hand
  3. Determine if You Require Advanced Technology Such as Acoustic Guidance and Alternate Zero Capabilities
  4. Keep an Eye Out for Convenient Add-Ons Such as Anti-shock Protection, Waterproofing, or Magnets
1

Make Sure the Display Is Easy to Read, and Opt For a Backlit or Glow-In-The-Dark Screen if You Tend to Work in Low Light

If you're opting for a digital level over a laser or spirit option, the most important difference is the screen. You'll want to be able to easily read the screen no matter the conditions that you're working in, so if you spend a lot of time in low light conditions, consider a backlit or glow-in-the-dark screen.

The size of the screen is another key element in its visibility, so you'll want to make sure it is as large as possible. This can be difficult with some of the more compact models, so you'll need to weigh up whether a pocket-sized level or a clear display is more important to you.

As the screen is only usually visible on one side, it is worth keeping in mind that digital levels don't have the same all-around visibility as spirit levels, although some screens do auto-rotate depending on the position they are held in. The screens on some models can be quite sophisticated, resembling small computer screens or scientific calculators, but most will have a relatively simple LED display.

Check the Dimensions and Pick the Right Size Level for the Jobs You Have In Mind

Check the Dimensions and Pick the Right Size Level for the Jobs You Have In Mind

Digital levels come in many different shapes and sizes depending on what job they're suitable for, varying from small boxes (sometimes called level boxes) that are only 10 cm across to strip levels that are designed to bridge gaps of over a meter.

With that in mind, our biggest piece of advice here is to make sure that the level you choose is the right size for the jobs you have planned. It's worth paying extra attention to any tight spaces you may encounter while working as you may find it awkward to use a larger level in smaller spaces.

You may also notice that some digital levels have foldable angle rules in order for you to be able to work in tight areas where you need to measure different angles. If you're looking for something for general use around the home, a smaller level is usually better.

3

Decide if You Need High-Tech Features Such as Acoustic Guidance and Alternate Zero Capabilities

As digital levels often have a small computer inside of them, they can have a number of additional features you wouldn't normally find in a spirit level. The level of sophistication usually directly correlates to the price, so if you're aiming at the more budget end of the spectrum, don't expect anything beyond the capability of a digital watch or calculator.

Aligning with a target value is made possible through acoustic guidance, while an Alternate Zero function enables you to specify an angle as the "alternative zero angle point," avoiding the need to do the math required to compute angles relative to a referenced angle set to 0°.

The good news is that nearly all digital levels will have some sort of memory function, allowing you to save previous settings, angles and other metrics. You'll also often be able to change the reading display from degrees to slope percentage, or mm/m.

Look Out for Useful Extras Like Anti-shock Protection, Waterproofing or Magnets

Look Out for Useful Extras Like Anti-shock Protection, Waterproofing or Magnets

When working on a busy building site, or simply tackling that DIY project, your level is bound to pick up a few bumps and bruises over the years, so it's worth looking for some extra safety features like anti-shock protection and impact-proof ends. If you're working at height, such as up a ladder or on scaffolding, then these features become a necessity.

You should also consider whether you require a level that is dust and/or waterproof depending on the environment. In the UK, it's always worth making sure your equipment is at least water-resistant if working outside, and having something dustproof is a good idea if you spend a lot of time in a workshop or working with wood.

Finally, there are some quality of life features that can make certain jobs hassle-free. Magnets are a great addition if you're working with metal surfaces or piping, for example, while V-shaped grooves allow a level to sit comfortably on cylindrical objects.

It's always handy to have a tool kit at home in case you need to do some quick tinkering - check out our buying guide!

A Compact Level With a Unique Reverse Contrast Display

This small orange box happens to be one of the best little digital levels around and is equally useful in an amateur or professional environment. The reverse contrast display is one of the most unique on our list and makes for extremely clear reading, especially when you consider how small this item is.

It's great for workshop environments thanks to the fact that it is completely dust-proof and waterproof, and whether you're working with wood or metal, it's extremely useful as the V-shaped grooves and strong magnets make it perfect for piping and other cylindrical objects

Shockproof and Suitable for Almost Any Environment

We don't get too much extreme weather here in the UK, but knowing your equipment is protected against the elements is a comforting thought. The Digi-Pas Pro Torpedo is dust-proof, waterproof and works at temperatures ranging from -20 to 60 degrees.

It's also extremely durable, featuring shock-proof properties to protect against high impact accidents and a glass-less LED display to avoid cracks. This, on top of the fact that it has V-shaped grooves and magnetic plates, means it's suitable for almost any environment.

A Jobsite-Tough Option at a Competitive Price Point

While looking at digital levels aimed at industrial job sites, you may have noticed that they tend to come with a premium price tag. The Accumaster Digital Level is the best value we've found for working professionals or DIY fanatics.

Its robust aluminium body makes it strong and sturdy enough for harsh working environments, and the rubber end caps help protect against drops. It's also one of the most precise options on our list, accurate to within 0.2 degrees.

The Best Budget Option for Accuracy

If you're purely interested in finding something to measure angles and don't need to worry about finding a spare straight edge for markings, then this option from Lytool is the best budget option on the market by far.

Accurate to within 0.1 degrees, this fantastic level only just misses out on the top three as the display is not available in anything other than degrees. This is only a small inconvenience, though, as something this accurate for the price is a steal.

An Extremely Accurate Piece of Kit

If you're looking for a compact, robust and highly accurate option for a project, then this offering from Stabila fits the bill. It's extremely accurate, only ever being a maximum of 0.05 of a degree out, so if you're working where the utmost precision is required, this will soon pay for itself.

We particularly like the acoustic guidance, with the level emitting a small noise when placed at certain angles. This helps in areas where you may not be able to see the screen clearly, which isn't often thanks to its rotating LED display. It's expensive, yes, but it's well worth it if you want the absolute best results.

If You Don’t Own a Level Yet, Make This Your First

A digital level is one of those things that would be of benefit to any tool or equipment collection, so if you don't yet have an electronic level or even a regular one, this is an excellent choice to have handy just in case.

It has all the features you'll need around the home, like an angled rule, angle finder, and simple-to-read spirit vials for quick checks. Whether you may one day decide to take on a home or garden project or you just need something to make sure that IKEA furniture is put together correctly, this is a great addition to a tool bag.

High-Tech Equipment for the Dedicated DIY Fan

The Stanley Fatmax is a piece of equipment where you'll instantly be able to look at the price and determine whether it represents value for money – or whether it's way more than you were thinking a digital level would cost. If you're a tradesperson, avid DIY-er or you spend a lot of time in a workshop environment, this is likely well worth the investment.

It's fully functional in all positions, has an audio cue at 0, 45, and 90 degrees, and has a digital accuracy with only a 0.1 degree margin of error. Perhaps its best feature is its memory recall, allowing you to cycle through your last nine measurements.

This offering from Trend is much more than a simple digital level as it allows you to measure any angle from 0 to 220 degrees. Plus, the 200 mm straight-edged rule makes marking surfaces completely hassle-free.

If you have an interest in carpentry or are looking at attempting your first bit of renovation around the home, then this piece of equipment will quickly become your best friend. It may not be quite up to professional standards of accuracy, but for hobbyist work, it's a solid choice

A Pocket-Sized Option That’s Great for the Home

The Digi-Pas Pocket Level is one of the smallest options on our list and is a briliant pick up for the home thanks to both its size and the vertical and horizontal spirit levels that are included. If you're looking to straighten out furniture, shelving or picture frames, this couldn't be more suited.

Alternate zero means recalibrating to a set angle, meaning you'll need to find a flat surface to initially calibrate the level. Once you've set it up, however, you'll be ready to tackle those odd jobs around the home in no time.

Offers a Nice Straight Edge and Clear Display

Sometimes you just need a level to be able to mark lines and make sure the gap between two shelf brackets is level. If you don't want to spend too much, then this is a good option for the price at 40 cm long.

While this is great for putting up shelving, pieces of furniture and the like, it's really not suitable for those working in a more heavy-duty setting or one where precision is required. The display is crystal clear though, which still makes it a worthy upgrade from a regular spirit level.

Why Choose a Digital Level?

Why Choose a Digital Level?

While you may be familiar with a traditional liquid-based spirit level, a digital level gives a clear and accurate measurement that is easy to read rather than the more nebulous bubble floating between two lines. Digital levels can be a little more expensive, but the difference isn't as big as you may think and they are a worthwhile upgrade in many cases.

Though not quite as accurate as a laser level, digital levels are over four times more accurate than a spirit level. They achieve this accuracy by having an accelerometer, or inclinometer, to measure the angle of a surface to within a hundredth of a degree.

Another big benefit is that you are able to measure different angles accurately. If you’re fitting archways in the home or garden or working with sloped roofs, then having a digital level is much quicker and easier than even an adjustable spirit level as you're able to both set and record the angles you want to work with.
